I was the first born of six kids to a Signal Corps dad with Italian blood from northern New Jersey and an educator Mom with Irish roots from western Massachusetts. As was usual, my childhood as an Army brat was marked by the numerous transitions that comes with military service. I arrived in Augusta GA as a high school student at Westside HS and began my first steps towards priesthood. I finished my college seminary at the Benedictine Abbey in southern Indiana at St. Meinrad’s and I was blessed to be sent to study theology at the American College at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. I was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Raymond Lessard in 1984. Since then I have served at St. Joseph’s in Macon and St. James in Savannah as assistants to the pastor. After getting my M.Ed. at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, I taught at Pacelli High School at St. Anne’s in Columbus, GA. I was sent to St. Teresa of Avila by Bishop Kevin Boland in the summer of 2000 and have served happily in many roles here at the same parish where I worshipped when I first came to Augusta so many decades ago.
I am a native of the gallant and courageous Tiv people of Benue State in Nigeria. I was born and raised by a teacher Dad and a business Mom in the small town of Zaki-Biam. As it was the case for every Tiv family, my parents had a farm and at a very tender age I was introduced to farm work where I learned the importance of hard work and dedication.
Growing up as a little boy, all I ever wanted to do was to play soccer with my friends in the streets of Zaki-Biam, but having a teacher Dad meant that wasn’t going to be possible. There were requirements to meet before soccer. Requirements like good grades, reading books, good behavior etc.
However, it wasn’t all soccer and farm work. My parents were and still are devout Catholics and I was raised as one. A typical day for me was daily Mass, school, homework and house chores, and then play. In the evening the houses on our block would gather at our house for what we called Block Rosary and we prayed together the rosary of the blessed Virgin Mary. Even non-Catholics joined us for this beautiful prayer. I was also enrolled into the Altar Servers Association of our local Catholic Church. Serving as an altar boy would be the first place where I got the first inkling to consider the priesthood. I was touched by the unique and selfless service of the priests I came in contact with at our local Church of St Anthony of Padua in Zaki-Biam.
